- After your secondary level of schooling, you can study any subject as per scheme of studies in your higher secondary level of schooling. Then study for a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design/Product Design/Vehicle Design.
- After your secondary level of schooling, you can study any subject as per scheme of studies in your higher secondary level of schooling. Then study for a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design/Product Design/Vehicle Design. After that, you can study for a PG degree or diploma course in Industrial Design/Product Design/Vehicle Design.
- After your secondary level of schooling, you can study any subject as per scheme of studies in your higher secondary level of schooling with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Then study for a bachelor’s degree in engineering and architecture and then study for a master’s degree in Industrial Design/ Product Design/ Vehicle Design.
- After your secondary level of schooling, you can study any subject as per scheme of studies in your higher secondary level of schooling. Then study for a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design/Product Design/Vehicle Design. After that, you can study for a PG degree or diploma course in Industrial Design/Product Design/Vehicle Design. Introduction
- A product designer (Industrial designer) is a design specialist who works on designs of everyday products that humans use.
- As a product designer you will focus on the appearance of the product, its functions, its material, its manufacturing process and the value of its experience.
- The aim of a product designer is to solve the problems through design. Thus, you will see that each year the same products come with better designs as each year they are improved with feedback that designers receive from end consumers.
What will you do daily
As an industrial designer, you will be required to fulfil the following roles and responsibilities.
- You will consult with your client regarding the designs and for any changes to further modify it.
- You will try to minimize the cost of manufacturing and production and examine the quality of material to be used in making the product.
- You will either focus on a particular product category or may involve in many product lines.
- You will conduct the testing of the product.
- After getting the approval of the design, you will create the physical model of the design.
- You will ensure the proper functioning of the product and evaluate its safety and appearance.
- As a product designer, you will be required to use various tools and machines to create the product.
- You will use software to create the 2D and 3D Computer Aided Designs (CAD) and Computer Aided Industrial Design (CAID) to help the manufactures and production departments.
- You will conduct the research in the market to develop or innovate new ideas.
- You will prepare the reports and samples of the various stages of the designing process to present before the clients.
- You will be required to have the technical knowledge to work with industrial tools, machines and equipment.
- Sometimes, you will be required to travel to client’s production centres to make a presentation for design proposals.
- You will coordinate with the sales, marketing and production department for negotiating the contracts.
- You will design the product while considering the consumer’s age groups, their demands and after making the product you will check how the consumer reacts towards it and what are their views.

- Reading Comprehension: Skills in understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
- Scientific: Skills in using various scientific rules and methods to get things done or solve problems.
- Technical: Skills in using various technologies and technical methods to get things done or solve problems.
- Technical Design and Drawing: Skills in creating and developing designs and drawings for various structures, machines, equipment, and devices.
Where will you work
- Freelance and contract work are common, and there may be some opportunities to work part time.
- The work environment is usually a clean, bright studio, office or workshop. Product designers may also spend some time in the factories where the items are made; these may be noisy, dusty or dirty.
- Freelance designers, or those working for design companies, may visit clients at their own sites, so a driving licence could be useful.
- Individuals working for companies that design products for foreign markets may have the opportunity for overseas travel.

Salary
- At the entry level, as a trainee, you will get around Rs.25,000 to 50,000 per month. However, if you are a graduate of IIT or other prestigious colleges, you might earn anything from Rs. 50,000 to 1,00,000 per month.
- A product designer with an experience of 2-6 years, will earn around Rs. 25,000 to 50,000 per month though if are hired in a reputed firm (or from IITs) you may earn around Rs.50,000 to 1,50,000 per month.
- A senior product designer with an experience of 6-12 years will earn around Rs 50,000-2,00,000 per month.
- At the senior level with an experience of 15+ years, you may expect to earn around Rs. 1,00,000 to 3,00,000 per month.
- On the academic side, as an assistant professor you would earn around Rs. 25,000 to 60,000 per month and after becoming an associate professor, you would earn around Rs. 1,00,000 to 1,50,000 per month as per your experience and after moving to higher posts you can expect your earning around Rs. 2,00,000 to 2,50,000 per month.
