Formal education is not mandatory to be a successful musician or singer. However, if a person wants to seek job as a professor at a college or university, they have to complete their Ph.D. degree in music after completion of masters and pass auditions.

A singer is an artist that performs songs using various techniques and training. They may write their own songs and sing or may even sing songs written by others. Professional singers go through rigid training and have a clearer understanding of tone and pitch. Given that there are a number of genres in singing, below are the most sought-after choices to build a niche in singing: Indian classical singer, Playback singer, Indian pop singer, Ghazal singer, Qawwali singer, Western Pop & Rock singer, jazz singer; Rapper.
As a singer, you don’t have to work as a 9-5 job. Many singers and vocalists work in the film and music industry where there is no restriction on working hours. However, there will be timelines to follow. In the teaching side, most of the work environment is relaxed where you would be working for 6 hours per day and there will be relaxed and creative sessions with students.
Although, if you are recording for a studio or give a live performance then you often work at night and on weekends also as most of the performances does happen on weekends and especially in the evening.
A singer may work independently or with a band/group after basic training and coaching to improve voice modulation.
